The Rev. Dr. Peter Kang

Peter is primarily responsible for developing and overseeing St. Paul’s ministries for UVA students. He actively serves as pastor and mentor for members of “The University Fellowship” (the Episcopal campus ministry for undergraduates at UVA) while remaining present to the whole University, including graduate students, as an Episcopal chaplain. Additionally, Peter helps plan and coordinate St. Paul’s Adult Formation programming and regularly assists with other parish-wide ministries.

Peter is originally from Virginia. He grew up in Fredericksburg and went to UVA for his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in Religious Studies, making him a so-called “triple hoo.” He also holds an M.Div. from Bexley-Seabury Seminary. Before returning to Virginia to join the staff of St. Paul’s in December 2023, Peter served parishes on the central coast of California and, prior to that, rural Louisiana. He was a chaplain at the Louisiana State Penitentiary (aka “Angola”) and helped coordinate a volunteer prison ministry program for the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana.

Peter is the husband of Samantha, a fellow academic and Ph.D. candidate in Religious Studies at UC Santa Barbara, currently working as an adjunct instructor at Washington & Lee (her alma mater) and flight attendant for United Airlines. She and Peter are excited about raising their two young sons, Simon and Benedict, in the area.
